Australian Rules Football Training

The core components of an Australian rules football training program are physical performance, skills exercises, and strength and conditioning.

Australian rules football training needs to develop all three energy systems- aerobic, anaerobic and the lactic. Because Australian rules football is played on such a large field, aerobic conditioning is particularly important. Professional Australian rules football training involves high volume running at varied intensities in an attempt to mimic the game situation (commonly referred to as interval training).

The power that a player generates determines how fast he or she is able to perform the 100 or more sprints per game. Weight training is beneficial to Australian rules football because it increases muscle strength and specific motor skills for improved power. Given the physical nature of Australian rules football, strength is also crucial for a player to be able to withstand the buffeting and bumping of a game.

Australian football drills deal mainly with handballing, kicking and catching.

As a contact sport, injuries are very common in Australian rules football. However, proper training can significantly reduce the likelihood of injury.

Characteristics of Australian Rules Football

Australian rules football games consist of 4 x 20 minute quarters. Each team plays with 22 players (18 on field and 4 interchange) on a modified cricket field.

Players can move anywhere on the field and move the playing ball by running, kicking or handballing it around the field. A unique characteristic of Australian football is the mark. This is where a player catches a kick that travel 15m + from another player and is awarded a free kick.

Positions are broken into three groups, they are backs, forwards and midfielders. However, as the game has evolved into a more mobile style of play, there is a lot more similarity between the traditional positions.

Australian rules football is a contact sport where players can bump, hold and tackle their opponents.

The long games (up to 2 hours) and large playing field (approximately 150m goal to goal) mean that Australian football is very physically demanding. Professional midfield players will often cover more than 20km in a game. The intensity of these movements will vary from low intensity jogging, and explosive sprints for the ball. Over the course of a game a professional player typically performs 100 or more sprints of approximately 20m in distance. These high intensity efforts account for approximately 20% of the total game time.
