Australian Rules Football, or AFL, is a running game, played across one of the largest fields in international sports, and played over 1.5 hours. Professional midfield players will often cover more than 20km in a game.
Because of the large volumes of running, aerobic fitness is perhaps the most important component of AFL training. That being said, it is an athletes speed & agility which will help them win the ball in a game situation and break away from defenders.
Given the physical nature of AFL, strength & power are crucial if an athlete is to withstand the body to body contact that is a normal part of the game. AFL weight/resistance training will also significantly reduce the likelihood of injury.
